The 80/20 Rule

The 80/20 Rule, also known as the Pareto Principle, suggests that 20% of actions cause 80% of the outcomes.

There are so many ways in which this shows up in life, so I’m going to be discussing it and talking about some ways we can think about this rule to improve our language progress, make our lives more efficient, and increase our level of happiness.

Examples of the Pareto Principle

  • 20% of criminals commit 80% of crimes
  • 20% of drivers cause 80% of all traffic accidents
  • 80% of pollution comes from 20% of all factories
  • 20% of employees are responsible for 80% of the results
  • 20% of flyers take up 80% of the flight attendants time (my own experience)

How to Use the 80/20 Rule

20% of effort leads to 80% of outcomes (e.g., learning a language, building a business)
Focus on the most impactful 20% to improve efficiency

20% of customers generate 80% of income
Prioritize these key customers

20% of activities account for 80% of happiness (e.g., walking, socializing)
Focus on these activities for greater happiness

20% of apps/programs are used 80% of the time
Important apps should be easily accessible

20% of cleaning tasks make 80% of the visible difference
Focus on key tasks like cleaning toilets, sinks, and floors

How can you use the 80/20 rule to improve your life?
