Europe By Train
I just came back from a trip in Europe and I thought I’d get on the microphone today and review some of the good and bad experiences I had there.
I made the adventurous decision to travel from London all the way to Istanbul by train (listen to the episode to see why I didn’t make it all the way!)
In this episode, I talk about my experience sleeping on trains, my time in each country, and why I suddenly changed my travel plans. There are also some useful expressions and vocabulary to help improve your English throughout.
This is a very casual, chatty episode, so hopefully you don’t mind. You’re always welcome to comment your feedback down below.
Using Past Perfect for Travel
At one point in the episode, I mentioned I was excited to go to Austria because I had never been before.
Past Perfect Tense:
I had never been to Austria before this moment.
We use the past perfect (“had never been”) to show that something happened before another past event or moment (“before this moment”).
In this sentence, it emphasises that the experience of never being in Austria was true up until that specific point in the past.
Past Simple Tense:
I never went to Austria.
This means that you didn’t go before, and you still haven’t gone now.
Maybe you could share a Past Perfect sentence about your own travel?

Hi Michael,
first of all, i really like listening to your Podcast. Keep up with that good work! *applause*
I m from Vienna, and i just wanted you to know that all supermarkets are open on saturday till 6:00 pm, and supermarkets at trainstations usually are open on Sunday till 8:00 pm.
All the best
Christopher
Hi Cristopher. Thank you! Strange! I believe you, but I found it really hard to find any supermarket in my area open after lunchtime on Saturday. The train station tip is a good one! There was one Spar open on Sunday right in the centre that I had to walk about 1 hour to get to. Haha! Anyway, great to hear I have listeners in beautiful Vienna!
