11 Lessons from Teaching
I’ve been teaching English online for almost 10 years now, and over that time I’ve picked up quite a lot of patterns and similarities between all my students.
In this episode, I share 11 life lessons and other interesting things that I’ve learnt from my students, my lessons, and running an online teaching business.

🌍 People Are the Same
Despite cultural or language differences, people everywhere share common hopes—to live happily, stay healthy, and protect their loved ones. When we remember this, it becomes easier to connect across cultures.
🌐 Cultural Differences
While we're all human, every culture has its unique norms. For example, in some cultures, smiling isn't a common gesture of friendliness. Learning to notice these differences helps avoid awkward or incorrect assumptions.
📚 We All Struggle
English learners around the world face many of the same struggles—like not getting enough conversation practice or finding grammar confusing. You're not alone in these challenges!
💡 Value is Expected
Once you offer something extra—like detailed notes or extra resources—people quickly grow to expect it. If you later remove it, they may complain, even if they were happy before. It's a curious business challenge!
🏫 Schools Are Bad (at Languages)
No matter where they're from, most students say they didn't learn to speak a language well in school. Traditional school methods often fail to teach real communication skills effectively.
🌊 A Rising Tide Lifts All Boats
Collaborating with others helps everyone grow. Even as a solo teacher or business owner, reaching out and sharing ideas can lift your work and the whole community.
🧘 Be Flexible
Great teachers know how to adapt. Sometimes a student needs something different than what you planned. Being open to change leads to better lessons and happier learners.
🪞 People Are Self-Centered
Many times I worried I hadn’t taught well, only to hear students say, “Sorry, I didn’t speak well today.” I realised people focus far more on themselves than others—something that’s oddly comforting!
🎭 Attitude is Important
A bad mood can ruin even the best lesson plan. But a good attitude can save a poor plan. Being cheerful, flexible, and encouraging makes all the difference.
🛡️ Don’t Take Things Personally
When a student disappears or cancels, it’s usually due to life circumstances, not you. Try not to take these things to heart—it rarely has anything to do with your teaching.
💰 Know Your Worth
I used to feel guilty charging money, even for work that took a lot of time and effort. But over time, I’ve learned that if something is truly helpful, it’s okay to value it—and yourself—appropriately.
